DESIGNERS & PRODUCTION TEAM
On this year’s Fall Quarter Eve (the Monday night before our first classes) I sat down to share a good cry on the phone with my mom about being on the precipice of senior year and losing sleep and finding time to go to the grocery store, as one does. After some time she reminded me it’s important to be vulnerable, to open up about these things to my friends, and my initial response was duh mom, I’m a theatre major with a therapist—I know that it’s important to be vulnerable. Then I wondered why I was crying in my room with the door closed, stifling my volume so my roommates wouldn’t be concerned.
My mother—like the sturdy, lone tree in Kamienska’s poem—spoke to me with open arms, her “branches” available for me to land on. While I knew in my head that vulnerability was important, I felt how hard it was to open up when no one around you appears willing to do the same. In a community where the status quo is to enshroud your feelings, creativity, and beliefs, expressing them is an act of bravery and generosity that frees and encourages the rest of the community to do the same. Vulnerability is reflective.
This is how, in our song cycle, twelve individuals can visit a campsite alone and leave together, safe, seen, fulfilled: acts of courageous expression that spread like reflecting light from community member to community member. They empower each other to shine—and to shine together, expansively, like a lake.
The resilience, warmth, playfulness, and dedication of our producer, stage manager, production team, cast, and the members of JTE, are all prime examples of what it is to shine in this way. I am inspired by each of you and grateful to have shared this community with you all.
